The weather has turned back to the normal grey overcast wintery maybe it will rain maybe it won't in Oxford now after our very cold clear days.  As you can see from this photo it is very grey in Oxford at the moment.

Sunset At Farmoor Reservoir

Was out at Farmoor Reservoir this evening just as the Sun was setting, it was very clear and chilly.  Nice looking trailer sailor in the reservoir this evening, strange to see a yacht so far inland?

You Can Not Canoe On A Frozen Oxford Canal

This cold snap has provided me with a new subject, and walking around you get to see the strangest things.  Walking up the Oxford Canal I saw a group with canoes on the roof racks of their cars pull in front of The Plough in Wolvercote and start to take them off.  I was thinking they are not going to try and put them in the Canal are they?  Over to the canal they came, and after hitting the ice with the paddle, they decided that if they put the canoe in or is that on the ice, and get in they might be able to break the ice, strange lot this group.  They where trying to paddle to Trupp??

They did get in and went no where, got out and decided to try the River Thames which was not frozen over.  One of there members put his canoe in on the other side and after about 30 minutes managed to get to the other side about 10 metres away.  More frozen Canoeist's here.

Ice Skating On Port Meadow

We have had a few chilly nights over the last couple of days which has frozen parts of the Oxford Canal and also a large area of Port Meadow, which this morning has become a giant Ice Skating area.  Loads of families and Ice Hockey players enjoying this very large flat ice rink.  So if you are in the area I would get your skates on and head on down to Port Meadow.  Additional Photo's here and I might have a bit of video here soon.

Sale On High Street Oxford

Sorry about yesterday, Friday's are hard for me, the end of the week and all that stuff.  Anyway last night and today have been very cold in Oxford, so we have had no clouds in the sky and the light has been great.

I was taking photo's of University Church on the High Street this afternoon when the reflection caught my eye and I decided to try get a shot of the SALE signage and the Church.  Took a few from a couple of stores, but I liked this one the best.

Two sides of the High Street in Oxford, on one side the Church of the University with all it's history and traditions, and on the other the retail store TOAST with it's traditional post Christmas Sale hoping to survive the current economic conditions so that it will not be history.

Shopping Is The Same All Over The World

Oxford Daily Photo is part of a great Daily Photo Community from around the world, but I bet no matter what city you are in you could get a photo like this, people waiting in a checkout queue at the local supermarket.  In this case, Sainsbury's in the Westgate Centre.  Happy New Year, and let me know if I am right!!

Australia "the movie" Hits Oxford

Great advert for both the STA Travel Agent and for the movie Australia.  It was a little funny that the signature theme was sung and written by Elton John.  I saw it this afternoon, and enjoyed it.  Good scenery, liked the scenes from in the Broome open air cinema, Sun Pictures and the music was good, you can't beat Elton.

Even Reflection At St Catherine's College

Just down around St Catherine's College this evening, it was very cold and still and this reflection in the water feature really tells the storey of how I was feeling when I took this photo.  Taken just before the sun was going down, bloody cold.

Pigeons In Bonn Square

Two pigeons enjoying the winter sun in Bonn Square this morning.  The Square looks very  good now that it has been updated, but I am not sure why the large tree had to be removed?  Let hope that that lady who feeds these pigeons with bags of bread crumbs stops feeding them, we have far to many in Oxford.

Ship Street Oxford

Ship Street in one of those streets right in the centre of town that no matter how busy the rest of the city centre is Ship Street always is dead quiet.  Like today, at the end of the street is Cornmarket which is heaving with after Christmas sale shoppers and not a soul in Ship Street. A couple of nice Cafe's in Ship Street if you need to get away from the crowds of Oxford.

Run With A View

These couple of joggers had the whole of South Park to themselves early this morning, it may have been because it was a little crisp this morning but the views over Oxford are always great from up the top of South Park what ever the temperature.

Christmas Sales Started In Oxford

The Sales have started today.  Many of the city centre stores have opened today with "There Biggest" ever sale.  I popped out for couple of hours this morning and with all the sale activity on it was not that busy in the city centre, and I only spent £3 on next years Christmas Cards!!

Christmas Lights

Like being out in the evening around Christmas to see all the lights in the gardens and on houses.  People go to a lot of effort to plan and put these lights up, and it really makes Christmas a special time of year. This is a very modern looking Christmas Tree on the Banbury Road in Summertown.

Merry Christmas From Me And Coke

This is the current advert on one of the two billboards in South Parade click here to see what the other is displaying at anytime.  I always keep an eye out for the Coke Christmas adverts, they are normally very typical this one has a few of London's landmarks in the background.

It is going to get very busy for me over the next few days, so I hope I can keep posting the photo's each day, if I don't sorry.  Merry Christmas to all my visitors and I hope 2009 is better than 2008 was.

Low Flying Aircraft For RAF Brize Norton

Being so close to the RAF's largest base RAF Brize Norton, Oxford sees it fair share of military aircraft over head.  This morning I heard this one long before I spotted it as it was so low I had to wait till it was just over head.  Not sure what type it is, but I am sure it was heading for Brize Norton.

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Following on from my photo the other day of the Radcliffe from Walton Street today I was on the Woodstock Road and managed to get a photo of the works from this angle.  You can see the scales that weigh the lorries as they leave with all the debris from the old Hospital.

Winter Sunset

Just up the Banbury Road when the sun was starting to set, it looked great with the trees in the distance, but why so early about 3.30pm!!  Cannot wait for the days to start to get longer!!!

Westgate Shopping Centre Christmas Tree

Was in the Westgate centre today and I know that they have had there Christmas Tree up for a little while but I have not taken a photo of it.  It looks good during the day however in the evening when it starts to get a little dark it looks even better with all the light in the mall.

Sunday, December 14, 2008

Down a very quiet lane in the middle of Jericho off Walton Street is the old Graveyard St Sepulchre's.  When you walk in the graveyard you will find it surrounded by very modern apartments that have been built on the old Lucy Work's site which is a little strange next to an 1848 cemetery.  The Vice Chancellor of Oxford University Benjamin Jowett was buried in the cemetery in 1893.  If you are in the area I would wonder in and have a quick look around, worth a look.

I Love Oxford

Great T-Shirt for anyone who Loves Oxford, I think New York City copied this design as I have seen a few of them around!! And what better place to get an I Love Oxford T-Shirt than Boswell's Oxford very own department store!

Western Computers & Apple Computers Arrive In Oxford

At last a computer store has arrived in Oxford that sells my favourite computers, Apple.  That's right everyone, Western Computers has opened a store in Broad Street Oxford today, and as the sign says they are a Premium Reseller of all Apple products.  No more trips to London for see the latest Apple products, I will still visit the London Apple store when I am in Regent Street!!!

Busking In Cornmarket

You see a lot of buskers in Cornmarket, but I am not sure I have seen a piano player before, portable keyboards yes, but piano's this was a first for me.  His name Mr Gill, and he was very good with all the Christmas shoppers enjoying the tunes.

Common Pheasant In Oxford

You see lot of these Pheasants out in the country side, bit I saw this one close in to suburbia this afternoon, near the North Oxford Golf Course, which maybe a good area for Pheasant I am not sure.  At least he is unlikely to be shot while around the gold course.

Frosty Morning

Plenty of frost about this morning,  and I was up late due to the works Christmas Party last night and I still managed to see a lot.  Be careful on the road over the next few days in the UK as there is will a lot of frost and ice around.   BBBRRRR!!

I Sat On The Roof And Kicked Off The Moss

That is a line from on of my favourite artists, and I think these are what he is talking about.  The moss that grows all over the place in the UK, like these on a wall at the JR Hospital in Headington.  Found  myself up at the A&E department early this morning and while waiting for the sun to rise decided to take a few shots of all the moss on the wall.

Oxford Roof Tops

A clear sky and the roof tops of Oxford.  Not sure why but I like this photo.  Taken this afternoon with little cloud in the sky we are going to have a cool night I think.

Welsh National Opera In Oxford

Boy they carry a lot of stuff.  I saw a couple of these lorry's in Oxford today and this one while walking past the New Theatre in Oxford was at the Stage Door being loaded up after one of the Opera Companies performance in Oxford.  This is a large operation by the number of trucks they have not an Opera fun but I am sure Oxford enjoyed the performance this evening.

Christmas Tree At Oxford University Press

I took the camera out today, but when I was about to take this photo I found out that I did not have my memory card with me....

So this photo was taken on my new iPhone, not the best device to take the Oxford Daily Photo with, but with no other choice it had to do.

This is the Christmas Tree in the court yard of OUP in Walton Street, my first Christmas Tree of any note that I have seen this year, looks good.

Oxford United Makes The Front Page

The sacking of Oxford United's Manager last night has made the front pages of the Oxford Mail this morning.  Unfortunately Oxford United are having a bad run and when that happens people start to look at the management of the team, but from what the papers are staying most people backed Patterson as Manager, but looks like the board did not.

Up Early With The Fog

Been out of action for a few days, but I am back on track now.  While I was stuck at home we had the Christmas Lights turned on, The Queens visit, and Bonn Square reopening so I missed a few good photo's I am sure unfortunately.

Very foggy in Oxford this morning and while out to station tried to get capture this in the lights of the cars and the street lighting.  Hoping it will clear up this morning and I will be able to see what is happening with the new Bonn Square redesign.

County Hall Christmas Lights

County Hall called in the County Fire Services to help get to the high spots on the tree outside County Hall.  Everywhere is starting to get real Christmassy now.  Every store in the High Street has there Christmas window displays up, and next week I think we will have our Christmas Lights turned on.

Maison Blanc Oxford Window Display

Taken early this morning the window at the newly refurbished Maison Blanc on the Woodstock Road.  Always very popular but even more so on a Saturday Morning with all the freshly baked bread and pastries, mmmmm   A little bit of France in Oxford!

Glowing Pink Sunset

Just liked the colours and the silhouette of the naked trees today when I saw this.  Sky was great at about 4.30pm this evening.

Has Savills In Summertown Moved?

Not sure why but Savills in Summertown have moved a couple of doors into new larger, brighter offices, you can see where the old store used to be in this photo, were the For Lease sign is, I am sure the new corner offices will attract more people into the office during this slow time for Real Estate Agents.  Savills of Summertown have not gone under, just moved a couple of doors down into bigger offices.

Duck On Waters Edge

I think that the river was flowing a little too fast this afternoon, even for ducks!  Spotted this great looking duck just sitting on the edge thinking about going in to the water, he didn't while I was watching.  Rivers are flowing well in Oxford with all the rain we have had over the last week.

Dull And Grey

Not the most colourful photo, but that is how it is in Oxford at the moment, very black/white/grey everywhere you look. Not a lot of leaves on the tree's as you can see, so we are really heading into the winter months now.  Was just feeling a little grey when I was out and about today, sorry!!

Magdalen College Gate/Happy Birthday Prince Charles

Taken early this morning, with the long shadows.  One of the gateways into Magdalen College with the Union Flag flying for Prince Charles 60th Birthday.  All of the Colleges were flying the Union Flags today for the Prince.  I know not a lot of wind when this photo was taken and the flag is a little hard to see.

Queen Elizabeth House

I said I was going to be in College Land all this week, and today I was in Queen Elizabeth House in Mansfield Road.  This is where the Universities Department of International Development is headquartered.  This area is where students and visitors can relax, read the daily papers and chill.  I have a feeling that this area is going to undergo a change after Christmas.

More Diplomatic Plates in town, but I was not allowed to take photo's of The President of Slovenia's cars while parked in the High Street.  Managed to get one before the police started to question me.

The Eagle and Child

Built around 1650 and now owned by St John's College this famous Oxford pub is not far from the busy commercial centre of Oxford in St Giles.  The Eagle and Child is popular tourist stop in Oxford as it was where JRR Tolkin and CS Lewis met up for a pint once a week for about 20 years.  Well worth a visit, like this photo as there are no cars in front of the pub!!

Balliol College Great Doors

Facing straight onto Broad Street in Oxford is the entrance to Balliol College.  Today the larger door was open as I was about to go in, normally they just have the little hatch door to enter, where the thousands of people going in and out over the years has warn away the pavement.  Nice day in Oxford today, Did manage to see a diplomatic number plate this afternoon, click here

St Catherine's Creek

I am going to be in College Land all this week, so expect a few photo's of colleges over the next few days.  It was raining a lot today and most of the Rivers around Oxford are flowing well, including the small creeks that feed in to them like this one in Manor Road before St Catherine's College.  Not exactly sure if it has a name, but it is part of the River Cherwell system.  Like the yellow from the tree.

Remembrance Sunday Oxford 2008

This year will mark the 90th anniversary of the original Armistice Day in 1918 when the Allies and the Germans signed the armistice treaty in a railway carriage near the front line in the France.  This morning in Oxford we gathered with past and present members of the armed forces to remember those who died and served the United Kingdom in all past conflicts. After the service at St Giles there was a march past of those to have served. Additional photo's here.

Starting To Get Christmassy At The Covered Market

Very busy little area of the Covered Market today was the Florist that was selling craft items for Christmas.  Love the all the Autumn colours on the stand, I think that the stores will have there Christmas decorations up soon.

Major Works At The Old Hospital

Since the Radcliffe Hospital closed about two years ago and was purchased by Oxford University there has been a lot of work going on at the site.  Today I managed to get up high to get a couple of photo's over the fence to see what has been happening.  There used to be a three story hospital wing were that bulldozer is now. I think this redevelopment is going to take a while to complete.

Autumn Colours

Great colours at the moment in Oxford as I tried to show in this photo taken this morning while in Chalfont Road. Days have been grey over the last week, so the colours in the trees help brighten up the scenery.

Guy Fawkes Night In Wolvercote

the Bone-fire is set alight and the crowd watch the fireworks display that is provided by the publican of the local pub "The Plough".  This is definitely the best place to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night in Oxford, next year head to the Green in Wolvercote.

Very Good Volvo In Great Condition Body Wise

Nice looking Volvo, wonder what it is like to drive?  Would it have another 4000 trouble free miles in her?  I am looking for a solid car for next Summer when I plan to go for a little drive to Moscow, I was thinking that I nice older Volvo like this one would do the trick.

Oxford Covered Market - Market Street

I was looking at great black and white photo's on flickr taken in Oxford and decided to go out and start looking for black and white shots.  I was walking around the city centre and decided that I like the Covered Market Sign and took this shot with a bit of movement in it.

Recession But A Full Car Park

The sky maybe grey, and we maybe in a recession but the car park is full at this Cowley box store centre.  I was reading in the papers today we will not go into recession until early next year as that is when the Australian band AC/DC will be touring the UK. Every tour of the UK that AC/DC has done has been while the UK economy has been in recession, mean while shoppers still shop and fight for car parking spaces in order to buy the bands latest album which is currently at #1.
