Oxford from Above

This photo was taken while up in a Hot Air Balloon over Oxford. The square that you can see in the centre of the photo is Christ Church College's main quadrangle, Tom Quad . I just love and respect the green belt that is around Oxford and lets hope that this will remain for ever.

With all the rain we have been having in Oxford lately the barber at the Elms Parade Shops in Botley must have had a little trouble with the down pipes and was having them repaired this afterroon.

Perch Closed - Fire

You may remember in January I posted a nice photo of the Perch in Bisney saying that it was a nice pub on the River Thames and that in the summer it is a nice place to walk to, however it can get busy. See Post. Well this afternoon I was in Binsey and as you can see the Perch was not busy at all. About three weeks ago I heard that there was a fire at the historic pub but I did not realise how damaging it was, the whole of the thatched roof has been burnt and the pub will be closed for awhile I would think.

Over Grown Cemetery

Right in the centre of Oxford just behind the Martyrs Memorial is a very old cemetery, which at the moment is a little over grown. Most of the head stones are so old that the inscriptions have worn away.

Fireworks and Freaks

This store on Kingston Road is very busy at this time of year, it sells all types on party stuff and with all the end of year balls I am sure is doing all right.

Daylight At The End Of The Alley

Was down this alley and walking out the day looked so bright, it just had to be captured

Why?

Why? Why do people see a cared for bike in the street and damage the wheels? Oxford as a very large cycle community, it is the easiest way to get around the city centre. It also has one of the largest reported bike theft and damage in the UK, and this is the result.

Fresh Local Produce

If you have ever been in Summertown you would have seen this local man selling his produce, grown in his own garden in Marston and cycled over to Summertown every morning to sell. When I took this photo at about 11am, he had already sold out of onions and told me that the display was looking a little thin on the bike.

The long wait is just about over

Sorry, I have been unable to get online for a few days, but I am back up and running now. Took this photo early in the morning well not that early about 8am, these people had been waiting since about lunch time on Friday for tickets to see Daniel O’Donnel at the New Theatre in Oxford. The wait was just about over as tickets where going on sale at 9am, long night I think for a few..

Wet Cement

Never seen this before, you must be able to buy wet cement ready to use and have it delivered. It looked great however by the amount that was dropped off it would mean lots of hard work was about to happen.

Down Down Down

Looking down from the top of the stairwell in one of the Banks in Cornmarket. Most of these old buildings look from the outside that they have three or four floors from the number of windows, but when you get in them they have been renovated and have five or six floors, think the ceilings must have been higher when they where originally built.

Recycle Oxford

The City of Oxford have recently introduced a new fortnightly collection of rubbish to encourage recycling in the City, our record is not that good at the moment. To do this we have all been given new wheelie bins and coloured boxes, I saw this notice on a shared student house this morning... It is explaining, what goes in which box or bin, think it is going to take a little time to get this right!!

Up Top On The Bus

A very easy way to get around Oxford is by bus, with two bus company's in Oxford you get a very good service all day long for local bus routes. Even places further afield like London the company's advertise buses leaving every 12 minutes, so I would say Oxford is very well served by public transport, it maybe a little on the pricey side, but if you are an Old Age Pensioner, bus travel is free out of peak times.

Turning on the Thames

University students turning the rowing boat outside the Isis Tavern this afternoon. This is always fun to watch, each boat also has a coach riding along in the side of the river giving advice.

Hayfield Road Oxford

Sorry for not putting a photo up yesterday, I had a busy day at work, by the time I got home I was just ready for bed. I did however take this photo yesterday, which is of a vintage car out the front of the Aladdin Garage at the end of Hayfield Road. The car looked nice parked in the street with the Anchor Public House in the background.

May Day in Oxford - Bridge Closed

I could not make the May Day celebrations at Magdalen Bridge this year, a real English/Oxford Tradition, however I did see this sign warning that the bridge would be closed while the celebrations where on. According to the radio this morning there was one Jumper from the Bridge into the Cherwell.
