Jubilee Gates Wolvertcote 1952-1977

Not a lot of information can be found about this gate on the net. This gate is in Lower Wolvercote leading to the meadow. I am going to ask around about these as it is not that long ago that they must have been put up.

Street Furniture

Street furniture is not that common in the area’s out of the city centre in Oxford, I am not sure why. I have been down this street 100’s of times, but I have never noticed the park bench before, I think it must be one of the only streets in North Oxford to have a park bench, anyway the reason why I noticed it was the note that was attached to it.

Leaves in Oxford

Not sure why this shot, but I just liked the light, trees, leaves and everything about this area apart from the busy traffic. I was not sure how to get the feeling of what I was seeing, so I just got down low and took this photo.

While in the Parks area of Oxford tonight I spotted the President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, who studied at Exeter College Oxford 1961-1964. Unfortunately it was a little dark and could not get a good photo of him or his number plates, but he is back in Oxford on Wednesday, so I will get a second chance.

Wet and Windy Sunday Morning in Oxford

A very windy morning today in Oxford, just look at the Union Jack Flags on the Randolph Hotel getting blown around. Don’t think we are going to see the sun today which is unfortunate as it is Sunday. Britain is not on GMT now with the clocks going back to 3am this morning. Just after I took this photo a nice Jaguar with Belgium Diplomatic number plates pulled in, not sure what mission it was from.

Great Time of Year to be a Gardener

The leaves are falling everywhere at the moment faster than I would say anyone in the garden can clean then up, this Car in South Parade will be covered in them in a couple of days I am sure. Still I like the colours they give to the streets and parks.

Milk Bars everywhere in Oxford

Getting a Milkshake in Oxford has never been easier, in the last year we have had three different milk bars open up within about 100metres of each other, and they are all great. Moo Moos in the Covered Market has bright pink cups for there milkshakes, which stand out when you see people drinking them in the street, all these milk bars have so many choices for you to choose from you could never try them all at Moo Moos they have over 600 different combinations.

New Lights

I have seen this guys around for a few days now in different areas of Oxford, this photo was taken on Kingston Road this afternoon. I think Oxford is having a street light make over?

Brick Wall and a TV cable

I am not sure what it was, I think it was the light and the shadow of the TV cable against the brick that made me stop and take this photo. It is just of a brick wall with old graffiti and shadows, click the photo to enlarge. You have to love the nice crisp clear days we are having at the moment.

England V South Africa

The Nation has turned to Rugby this weekend, with everyone hoping for an England win, even if it is against the bookies odds. Pubs, shops, and houses like this one in North Oxford are all flying the cross of St. George.

What I am not sure about is the tune or anthem that the English Rugby supporters sing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is a United States African-American Negro spiritual song, which is sung primarily in black churches and throughout the nation in tradition African-American venues. How come it is sung at English Rugby matches? Could England not have an English song to sing about?

Autumn Sun

The colours on Parks Road this afternoon were just lovely, and with the beautiful clear sky’s we are having at the moment gives the whole place great light. I love autumn, the way the trees turn, the colours change, and with the great weather we have been having and expect to have over the next few days, the whole city feels fab. This photo was taken on Parks Road looking towards Broad Street, just after lunch with all the students walking between the City and the Parks.

New Fat Face in Oxford

Good Bye Miss Selfridge, and hello Fat Face. I really like Fat Face and I think it is good that they are going to be moving in to a bigger store in Cornmarket, however I am disappointed that Philip Greens has decided to close his Miss Selfridge store in Oxford. But as they say, with the closing of one door another opens. Photo of the new store on the blog once it is open.

Photo is of punters enjoying the weather at the Kings Arms in the city centre which is a student pub with all the colleges around.

Wet Afternoon in Oxford

Well is was a wet day in Oxford this afternoon, and when you have rain and it is the end of the day the traffic around the city really comes to a stand still. This is exactly what happened at the Randolph Hotel this afternoon, apart from the bad weather the County Council was conducting a Transport Census which only added to the problems I am sure

Busy Oxford

Is just because I have been out in Australia for three weeks or is it because all of the students are back from the summer holidays, but Oxford today was just teaming with people. You can tell who the new students are, they are the ones with the new bikes or the ones riding down Cornmarket which is a pedestrian area guys. Anyway I followed heaps of students down towards New College today, which is were this photo was taken, the entrance to the College.

Parking Fines In Oxford

Spotted this car park in the High Street on double yellows, the not on the dash board reads: At The Crown Court Inquest Back In 30 Min, as you can see the parking officers in Oxford are not interested in that, they want to hit those daily targets to trigger the bonus!!

These inquests are about deaths of British solders in Iraq, like the one that happened earlier in the year..

Oxford Engineering Students at Work

Bet these guys are students from Engineering Faculty. Looks like the female student has lost her bicycle lock key and has turned to a couple of fellow students to help her get her bike off the street pole, lucky they had a ladder handy? Have a look at the other photo's of the guys getting the bike.

Nuffield College

I'm still not exactly sure where I was when I took this picture. I wandered down an alley and happened upon an open gate so I popped in. It was the back lawn of maybe a church or school. This was early in the morning so I got to see the sun rising on the spire of Nuffield College (on New Street).

Help Wanted

This help wanted sign was in the window of Puccino's, a cafe off of Cornmarket St. I've noticed that very few business use the standard (at least in the US) Help Wanted. Instead, signs read: people required or bar staff needed. I actually prefer this more forceful approach and certainly the quirkiness of Puccino's solicitations are appreciated.

Aerial View

A spectacular view of Oxford from above. I climbed the tower of St. Mary the Virgin church this morning - I highly recommend it, especially on a beautiful sunny day like today.
I am going to Edinburgh for a few days so there won't be a pic until Monday. Have a great weekend!

Busts

The sun came out around 4 today, so I went for a walk hoping to get some pictures with a blue sky background. These are the busts of Emperors (visible through the window of my Blackwell photo) outside the Sheldonian Theatre.

Christ Church Meadow

A friend and I cut through Christ Church Meadow on our way to Cowley Road for some thrift store shopping. We ended up taking the scenic route on accident, but I'm glad because we got a new view of Christ Church.

The Bodleian Library

A simply magnificent structure.
(I was having internet difficulties yesterday so i'm going to post two pics today. This was the one I had intended for Monday...)
