Greek Taverna Closes

Another restaurant on Banbury Road in Summertown closes, last month I posted a photo of the closed La Dolce Vita restaurant and today on the other side of the road I noticed the Greek Taverna had closed. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I had a good friend visiting from Canada and we had a nice meal in this restaurant, it was only our party and another couple in the restaurant the whole evening. Where are all our independent businesses going? It is the cost of the business rates that are pushing businesses to the wall?

Absolutely - more and more businesses are going to the wall because of business rates. Just to give you some idea - Oxford Council generally charges 40% of the annual rent in rates. That means that a business of that size, probably has to pay £35,000 in rates (that is an estimate).

It is a total scandal that honest businesses go bankrupt because of greedy councils.
