Borders Closing Down Sale Starts In Oxford

As I am sure alot of my readers know, the Borders book store across the nation has gone into administration. As apart of that process the store on Magdelan Street in Oxford is having a massive percentage off sale. I was always under the impression that Borders was a string business attracting alot of well known authors to the store to sign books just after there release, guess I was wrong. What is going to happen to the Starbuck and Paperchase departments??

Chocked! I was looking forward to spending some of my X-mas book tokens there. Well, I guess one really should support the local "un-chained" businesses anyway.

The same in Stockport too - Borders there has a Starbucks on the upper floor plus other concessions in the store. Those posters with "up to" (in small print) 50% off are identical to the ones that were plastered in the windows of Woolworths last year and just the same hardly anything is discounted 50% yet - it is mostly 20% and 30% only.

This makes me very sad. Borders was a great place to sit down with a cup of coffee and browse some magazines.

I hear the Starbucks will close and the staff (or partners as they call them) will be relocated to other stores in the area. Not sure about Paperchase.

All Starbucks staff are safe through transfers to other stores, although some have resigned.

For me this shut down is a bit of a disaster for Oxford. I've been going to Starbucks in Borders nearly every day for the past 4 years and met lots of amazing new friends there amongst staff and other regulars.

From what I've been told, Starbucks is in discussion with the new potential buyers to set up some deal, so it might reopen in the new year. Won't be the same without a bookshop attached to it though...

Recently added your photoblog to my google reader account and I really like it!

Happy rest of the Christmas and happy new year!
