I have always been very confused by the word "Bollard" and here I see it on the side of a van in Cornmarket Street. I am not sure where the word "Bollard" came from but I do find it a strange word. I think these guys were fixing the rising bollard to stop unauthorised traffic from entering Cornmarket.
The word bollard comes from a Nautical term: A thick post on a ship or wharf, used for securing ropes and hawsers.
ReplyDeleteIt also shares the same root from which we get "bole" to describe the trunk of a tree.
